Security is more than a simple checklist you can follow - it's a state of mind. There are, however, a few comparitively easy steps you can take to greatly decrease the chance of someone accessing your system without your permission:

  • Don't run software that you didn't either buy at a store or download from a trusted source (such as a large, popular shareware site).
Line: 7 to 8

    • Especially true for UnixTypes?. There is absolutely no good reason to run all of the FTP, telnet, and web services installed by default on many commercial Linux systems.
  • Use a real password!
    • Your child or pet's name is not safe. Neither is your birthdate, the model of your car, or your anniversary. A misspelled version of the author of your college math book, on the other hand, is probably OK.

    • ESPECIALLY do not install software that a friend emails to you. Ever! Although this sounds paradoxical, many (if not most) viruses and worms are relayed from friends and acquaintences.
    • This won't prevent 100% of potential virus infections, but is probably the single most important rule to follow.
  • Don't run software that you don't need to run.

  • Do not, under any circumstances, operate a MicroSoft OperatingSystem or WebServer? (such as MicrosoftIIS?).
