Slashdot is one of the premier news sites for serious geeks. Websites prominently featured on its front page often experience something called the "Slashdot Effect" (or are said to have been "Slashdotted") which is what happens when a small, low-capacity site gets hit by several million visitors in one afternoon.

Subwiki's slashdotting was very minor and caused no noticeable problems. We only experienced a 500% increase in web traffic that day.

This chart shows the number of hits per day during a typical time period, and on the day that one of my articles ran on Slashdot.
